Google Maps Is Changing How Customers Find Local Businesses
Local businesses may be getting discovered on Google without receiving the same number of website clicks and calls they were used to seeing.
New Q2 2026 Google Business Profile data from GMBapi shows a notable change in how U.S. customers are interacting with local businesses. Website clicks from Business Profiles fell 12.5% year over year. Calls fell 11.9%. At the same time, direction requests increased 21.1%, mobile Google Maps impressions increased 30.4%, and desktop Maps impressions returned to growth.
That does not automatically mean Local SEO is producing less value.
It may instead mean that more of the customer journey is happening directly inside Google Maps and other Google surfaces before a person ever visits the business's website.
For contractors, law firms, dental clinics, medical practices and other businesses that rely heavily on local discovery, this changes how Google Business Profile performance should be interpreted and how Local SEO should be measured.
This article looks at what the new data actually shows, where the limitations are, and what businesses should change in response.

What Does the New Google Maps Data Show?
GMBapi analyzed year-over-year Google Business Profile performance across its portfolio for Q2 2026.
In its U.S. data, several customer-action metrics moved in opposite directions.

Calls
Direction requests
Mobile Maps impressions
Desktop Google Maps impressions also increased 3.2% year over year after declining 17.9% in Q1. Desktop Search impressions increased 13.9%, while mobile Search impressions fell 20.1%.
The original dataset and methodology are available in GMBapi's updated 2026 Local SEO analysis.
Google itself defines Business Profile website clicks, calls and direction requests as separate performance metrics, which means movement between those actions can materially change how a Business Profile report looks even when the business continues to receive local exposure.
Google explains those metrics in its official Business Profile performance documentation.
There Is an Important Limitation: This Is Not Canadian Market Data
Vancouver Island and British Columbia businesses should not interpret a 12.5% decline in U.S. website clicks as evidence that their own Business Profiles should also be down exactly 12.5%.
The figures above come from GMBapi's U.S. customer portfolio.
The company also notes that its dataset is somewhat weighted toward the home-services sector and that changes in advertiser activity can make certain impression metrics, particularly mobile Maps impressions, noisy.
The Correct Interpretation
This is a directional signal about changing local-search behaviour, not a universal benchmark every business should expect to match.
That distinction matters.
A Nanaimo roofing company, Victoria law firm or Duncan dental clinic should compare its own Google Business Profile data year over year rather than assuming U.S. averages represent its market.
But the broader behavioural change is worth paying attention to because Google Maps and Business Profiles are the same platforms Canadian consumers use for local discovery.
Is Google Maps Becoming the Destination Instead of the Starting Point?
One plausible interpretation of the data is that customers increasingly need less information from the business website before deciding where to go.
Think about what a modern Google Business Profile can already provide.
- Business name
- Location or service information
- Opening hours
- Reviews
- Photos
- Services
- Phone number
- Directions
- Booking options for eligible businesses
- Questions and other business information
For many local decisions, a consumer can evaluate several businesses without opening ten separate websites.

GMBapi's interpretation is that more U.S. customers are completing a larger portion of this journey within Maps itself.
That interpretation is consistent with direction requests rising while outbound website clicks and calls decline, but it should still be treated as an interpretation of behavioural data rather than a Google-confirmed explanation.
For a deeper explanation of how Maps fits into the wider search ecosystem, see our Local SEO guide for British Columbia.
Does This Mean Your Website Is Becoming Less Important?
No.
It means the website's role is changing within some local customer journeys.
A customer may not need to visit your website before asking for directions, but Google still needs information to understand the business, its services, locations and relevance.
Google states that local rankings are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. It also says prominence can incorporate information from across the web, including links, and that ordinary web ranking signals matter to local results.
You can read Google's current explanation in its official local-ranking documentation.
So the wrong conclusion would be:
A better conclusion is:
Your website still creates opportunities to rank organically for service, location, treatment and practice-area searches that a Business Profile cannot comprehensively answer.
What Does This Mean for Contractors and Home-Service Businesses?
This is particularly relevant to contractors because GMBapi says its underlying dataset has some home-service bias.
For roofers, HVAC companies, plumbers, electricians, painters, septic companies and similar businesses, declining Business Profile website clicks do not automatically mean fewer leads.
A homeowner might:
- see your company in Maps,
- read your reviews,
- look through project photos,
- remember the business name,
- search for you later,
- call through another source, or
- visit the website through branded search rather than the original GBP click.
Attribution becomes less straightforward.
Direction requests are also less meaningful for some service-area businesses than they are for stores, clinics or restaurants. If an electrician travels to the customer's house and hides its address on the Business Profile, “directions” is obviously not the primary conversion.
That makes proper lead tracking even more important.
| Contractor Metric | What It Actually Tells You |
|---|---|
| Maps grid visibility | Where customers can realistically discover you |
| GBP calls | Calls directly attributed to Google's call button |
| Organic calls/forms | Leads generated after a website visit |
| Branded searches | Potential evidence of customers researching the company later |
| Booked jobs | Whether increased visibility actually produces revenue |
Our SEO strategies for contractors and home services are built around that broader funnel rather than treating website sessions as the final objective.
What Does This Mean for Law Firms?
Local legal searches are particularly sensitive to trust.
Someone searching for a family lawyer, personal injury lawyer or immigration lawyer may now be able to evaluate substantial information before visiting the firm's website.
Reviews, office location, lawyer names, opening hours, photos and Business Profile information can all influence the initial shortlist.
That makes the firm's Google presence part of the conversion process rather than simply a gateway to the website.
For a Law Firm, This Means:
- Practice areas should be clear across both Google and the website.
- Firm and practitioner information should be accurate.
- Reviews increasingly influence the pre-click decision.
- Attorney biography and practice-area pages still matter for deeper research.
- Consultation calls and forms should be tracked separately from GBP website clicks.
A firm therefore should not assume that declining clicks from its Business Profile means fewer potential clients discovered the firm.
It should look at the entire acquisition path.
Our SEO for law firms strategy connects Google Maps visibility with organic practice-area rankings, local authority, attorney expertise and consultation conversion.
What Does This Mean for Dentists and Medical Clinics?
This trend may be even more important for businesses where the customer physically travels to the location.
A patient searching for a dentist can often evaluate:
- distance from home or work,
- opening hours,
- reviews,
- clinic photographs,
- phone number,
- website,
- services, and
- directions
directly from the local search experience.
If direction requests are increasing while website clicks fall, a physical clinic may still be receiving meaningful customer activity even though its website analytics appear less impressive.
Graphic 3 · The Clinic Decision Can Happen Before the Click
This does not reduce the importance of treatment pages. A person researching implants, Invisalign, emergency dentistry or another higher-consideration treatment may still need far more information than a Business Profile can provide.
That is why our SEO for dentists approach combines Google Maps visibility with treatment-specific organic search.
The Same Numbers Mean Different Things for Different Businesses
| Business Type | Most Important GBP Actions | What Not to Overreact To |
|---|---|---|
| Home-service contractor | Calls, leads, service requests | Directions may be less meaningful |
| Law firm | Consultations, calls, branded discovery | One declining website-click metric |
| Dental / medical clinic | Calls, bookings, directions | Lower click-through alone |
| Retail / physical location | Directions, visits, calls, purchases | Website traffic as the only success measure |
Local SEO reporting should therefore reflect the business model rather than using the same dashboard for every company.
Local SEO Reporting Needs to Move Beyond Website Clicks
Google Business Profile reporting already separates multiple types of interaction.
Google currently allows businesses to monitor metrics including profile views, searches, calls, website clicks, directions, messages and bookings where applicable.
If customer behaviour is shifting between those actions, reporting needs to show the whole picture.

Google has also introduced the ability to connect Google Business Profile with Google Analytics, allowing eligible businesses to view Business Profile engagement alongside website and app data.
Google describes the purpose of that integration as providing a more complete view of how customers find and engage with businesses through Search and Maps.
More importantly, businesses should connect search reporting with their own CRM, call tracking, appointment system or lead records whenever possible.
A Ranking Report Alone Can Miss the Change Entirely
Imagine a business ranked third for its most important keyword last year.
It still ranks third today.
A traditional rank tracker might report:
But underneath that ranking, customer behaviour could have shifted considerably.
Fewer people may click the website. More may evaluate businesses through Maps. Some may request directions. Others may search the company name later.
This is also why one manual Maps search provides an incomplete picture.
In Van Isle SEO's own 2026 Victoria Google Maps Ranking Study, proximity was the strongest predictor of Maps rankings across the 100 contractor listings we analyzed.
A business can therefore have very different visibility depending on where the customer is searching from.
If you appear by business name but cannot find yourself for important local searches, our guide explaining why a business may not appear on Google Maps explains the difference between ranking and eligibility problems.
What Should Local Businesses Do About This?
The answer is not to abandon websites, stop tracking calls or chase every new Google feature.
The practical response is to make the entire local presence stronger.
1. Treat Your Google Business Profile as a Conversion Asset
Your profile may be doing more of the work that previously happened on your website.
Confirm that your business name, category, hours, phone number, website, address or service area, services and other information remain accurate.
If you have not reviewed the profile recently, use our Google Business Profile optimization checklist.
2. Stop Evaluating Local SEO Using Website Traffic Alone
Organic sessions remain useful, but a local business should also track:
- Maps visibility
- Business Profile views
- calls
- direction requests where relevant
- bookings
- form submissions
- branded search demand
- qualified leads
- customers
- revenue
3. Continue Building the Website
The website remains the place where you can comprehensively establish service, treatment, practice-area and geographic relevance.
A contractor still needs strong service pages. A law firm still needs practice-area pages. A dental clinic still needs treatment pages.
The goal is not to choose between Google Maps and the website.
The two should reinforce one another.
4. Build Genuine Reviews Consistently
Reviews influence how potential customers evaluate a business directly within Maps.
Google also states that review count and positive ratings can contribute to local ranking.
Create a consistent process for asking genuine customers for feedback without incentives or review manipulation.
5. Measure Maps Visibility Geographically
Local rankings change by search location.
A grid-based rank tracker provides much more useful information than searching your own keyword once from your office.
6. Connect Local Visibility to Business Outcomes
Ultimately, the question is not:
It is:
The Local Search Priority Matrix for 2026
| Action | Impact | Effort | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verify GBP information is accurate | High | Low | Do now |
| Review conversion tracking | High | Low / Medium | Do now |
| Track geographic Maps visibility | High | Medium | High |
| Improve reviews and profile assets | High | Ongoing | High |
| Build service/location website relevance | High | Medium / High | High |
| React to one month of declining clicks | Low | Low | Avoid overreacting |
Where Does AI Search Fit Into This?
The customer journey is also becoming less dependent on the traditional list of ten blue links.
Google is increasingly integrating AI-assisted experiences into Search and Maps, while consumers can also research local businesses using platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
The important distinction is between what we know and what remains interpretation.
Google publicly confirms that Business Profile information is displayed across Search and Maps and that information about businesses can be assembled from multiple sources across the web.
GMBapi's interpretation of its 2026 data is that richer Maps and AI experiences may be allowing consumers to answer more questions without needing to leave Google's environment.
That is plausible, but businesses should not respond by chasing hypothetical AI ranking factors.
Instead, strengthen the information search systems can actually understand:

What Should You Check in Your Own Data This Week?
Instead of assuming your business follows the industry trend, compare your own performance.
- Compare GBP calls year over year.
- Compare website clicks year over year.
- Compare direction requests where they matter to your business.
- Check Search and Maps visibility separately.
- Review branded organic searches in Search Console.
- Compare total organic leads, not only GBP actions.
- Compare booked customers and revenue.
If website clicks declined but local visibility, enquiries and revenue increased, the decline may not be a problem at all.
If clicks, calls, visibility and leads all declined together, that is a very different situation and deserves investigation.
Our Local SEO services focus on identifying exactly where that loss or opportunity exists rather than interpreting one metric in isolation.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Google Maps Shift
Are Google Business Profile website clicks declining?
In GMBapi's U.S. portfolio, Google Business Profile website clicks declined 12.5% year over year during Q2 2026. That does not mean every business or geographic market experienced the same decline.
Are Google Business Profile calls declining?
GMBapi reported an 11.9% year-over-year decline in calls across its U.S. Q2 2026 data. Businesses should compare their own year-over-year performance before determining whether they are experiencing the same trend.
Are people using Google Maps more?
The same dataset reported a 30.4% increase in U.S. mobile Maps impressions and a 3.2% increase in desktop Maps impressions during Q2 2026. GMBapi interprets this as evidence that more local discovery may be happening directly in Maps.
Why are direction requests increasing?
Direction requests increased 21.1% year over year in GMBapi's U.S. Q2 dataset. One possible explanation is that customers are completing more research inside Google and proceeding directly to a physical business, but the data does not by itself prove the cause.
Does fewer website clicks mean Local SEO is performing worse?
Not necessarily. A business could receive fewer clicks from its Google Business Profile while generating more direction requests, bookings, branded searches or customer visits. Performance should be evaluated across the entire customer journey.
Should businesses still invest in their websites?
Yes. Websites remain important for organic rankings, service and location relevance, detailed research, conversion and the broader information Google can associate with a business.
Should I optimize my Google Business Profile?
Yes. Google recommends keeping Business Profile information complete and accurate, and explicitly states that complete business information helps it understand and match businesses with relevant local searches.
Do Google Maps rankings still matter?
Yes, but the ranking position alone is not enough to measure performance. Local visibility should be combined with calls, clicks, directions, bookings, leads and revenue.
Does this data apply to Canadian businesses?
The specific figures discussed in this article come from GMBapi's U.S. dataset and should not be treated as Canadian benchmarks. Canadian businesses can use the findings as a trend worth monitoring while comparing their own Google Business Profile data.
What should a service-area business track if directions do not matter?
Service-area businesses such as contractors should focus on geographic Maps visibility, calls, form submissions, quote requests, branded search activity, booked jobs and revenue rather than relying heavily on direction requests.
What should physical-location businesses track?
Clinics, professional offices, retailers and other physical-location businesses should consider directions alongside calls, website clicks, bookings, Maps visibility and actual customer or patient acquisition.
Van Isle SEO Takeaway
Local SEO Is Not Becoming Less Important. The Customer Journey Is Becoming Less Click-Dependent.
The most useful takeaway from this data is not that websites are dying or that Google Maps has replaced Local SEO.
It is that businesses need to stop treating a website click as the only successful outcome of local visibility.
A customer may discover your business, evaluate your reputation and make a decision before ever opening your website.
That makes the quality and consistency of your entire local presence more important, not less.
If your Google Business Profile clicks or calls have changed and you want to understand whether the cause is rankings, geography, profile performance or changing customer behaviour, talk to Van Isle SEO.
